Michel Jeruchim survived the Holocaust because his parents were able to arrange for his safety in France through a network of saviors who transported and hid Jewish children after the Vichy government began to round up and deport Jews in 1942. He was 5 years old when he saw his parents for the last time. In his recently published book, Out of the Shadows: A Memoir, Survival in Nazi-Occupied France and Making a Life in America, he painstakingly reconstructs his early years as a hidden child, living with a Catholic family in the French countryside, separated from his two siblings–and then the drama of reconnecting with them after the war and the transformation of building their lives in the U.S.
